The Significance of the Nuremberg Trials for the Development of International Law and the Establishment of International Justice

The Nuremberg trial, conducted by the International Military Tribunal that was established in accordance with the agreement concluded in London on August 8, 1945, between the governments of the USSR, the United States, the United Kingdom, and the Provisional Government of France, was without any exaggeration a key event of the twentieth century. The creation of the tribunal, the 1945–1946 Nuremberg trial itself, and its results represent the only example so far in the history of mankind of how adequate legal solutions were found based on genuine international cooperation. Lawyers and politicians of that time were able to find non-trivial solutions, compromises and pragmatic options in an absolutely unique global situation. The purpose of the article is to study the effect of the Nuremberg which brought Nazi criminals of the highest rank to individual criminal responsibility for crimes against peace, humanity and war crimes, on the development of public international law, especially on the formation of the branch of international criminal law and international criminal justice bodies. As a result of the study, the authors conclude that the decisions of the International Military Tribunal, being a paradoxical synthesis of the constructive possibilities of various legal systems, interference of locality and extraterritoriality of jurisdiction, became an example of pragmatic cooperation between its creators and the legal basis for the development of public international law.
