The Image of Faust in the Works of Franz Liszt As the Embodiment of a Romantic Hero

Abstract

In this article we seek to reveal the essence of the musical image of "Faust" in the work of Franz Liszt on the example of the Sonata h-moll. Turning to Goethe's tragedy, the composer turns not to the plot, but to the image of a passionate human mind and heart and philosophical questions of genius on the one hand. On the other hand, a man of his time, Liszt synthesizes Goethe's problem of the crisis of cognition with the romantic contradiction underlying the phenomenon as a whole. We come to the conclusion that the composer comprehends the cultural archetype of Faust and presents his concept, which combines the features of Goethe's humanistic interpretation and the typical features of the hero of the romantic era. The features of the concept "Faust" are derived from the Sheet. In the context of the problems, the article is an interdisciplinary study, including cultural and musicological methods, which allows to reveal the topic more fully.
