"Social Realists" and "Digital Avant-Gardists": Mechanisms of Solidarity in an Augmented Modern Society

The importance of the topic is dictated by the growing problems of researching the contradictions between the new digital forms of group solidarity of young people (communicative, transit, streaming, algorithmic) and the dominance of traditional mechanisms of solidarization, which creates a value-behavioral gap (high assessment of mutual assistance with low readiness to participate – 27%) and increases the fragmentation of the social structure in the context of augmented modernity. The purpose of the study is to identify new forms of group solidarity of young people in the context of augmented modernity. Based on a survey of humanities students at two St. Petersburg universities (n = 223), new digital forms of solidarity have been identified: communicative, transit, streaming, and algorithmic. Digital mechanisms of solidarity (n = 135) prevail over traditional mechanisms (n = 88) by more than 1.5 times. There is a value-behavioral gap, which is expressed in the fact that a high assessment of the role of mutual assistance is combined with a low willingness to personally participate (only 27%). The results indicate that traditional institutions are gradually losing their monopoly on the formation of collective values, and the social structure is increasingly fragmented into digital micro-communities.
