Abstract

The curatorial turn, which led to a new understanding of the curatorial project, plays an important role in art criticism. After the curatorial turn, the curatorial turn the curatorial project began to be interpreted as an open self-critical practice. As this phenomenon has been little researched, this article considers the problem in this formulation for the first time. The aim of this study is to investigate the transformation of critical discourse under the influence of the new situation that emerged after the curatorial turn. The research was conducted on the basis of philosophical reflection on turns in culture and the method of socio-cultural analysis. The research revealed the main trends in the development of the “cultural turn” phenomenon: criticism is an important component of the curatorial turn, as the curatorial project became a public space for the expression of new trends, their artistic reflection, and wide-format discussions between artists, curators and viewers. However, the curatorial turn has also exacerbated the crisis of art criticism, which forces us to rethink the relationship between critics and curators of contemporary art. The results of this study open a new theoretical direction in exploring the challenge that the curatorial turn has posed to the activities of the contemporary art critic.
