The “Generation” Concept: Characteristics and Classification

The article deals with the problem of defining the concept of “generation”. Currently, there are numerous definitions; they all differ in the field of scientific knowledge or have a generalizing characteristic. The author analyzes existing approaches to the concept of generation and its essence and traces the main stages in the development of a scientific understanding of generations. In the course of the research, characteristic features of the concept under study have been analyzed and an original definition of “generation” has been formed. The data obtained will make it possible to more accurately determine intergenerational differences and will be useful in sociological, political, conflictological, psychological and pedagogical studies. They will also allow more precise identification of generations, revealing key differences between them and overcoming these distinctions.
