About the Competition of Family and Mass Media in the Upbringing of Young People

Abstract

In the context of the increased and contradictory role of various mass media, many specific aspects of youth education remain insufficiently investigated. It is relevant to study the competition between social institutions represented by the family and educational institutions and modern mass media in the issues of socialization of the individual, education of the younger generation and trends in this competition, which is the purpose of this study. At the same time, special attention is paid to the question of which qualities of the younger generation, voluntarily or involuntarily, are promoted, on the one hand, by family and education, and, on the other hand, by the mass media, and what socially significant problems exist in this regard. Sociological data indicate a tendency to weaken the role of family and education and to strengthen the role of the media in the upbringing of children, adolescents and young people as they grow up. At the same time, mass media contribute significantly not only to "positive socialization" (the formation of a number of more or less positive qualities in individuals and groups), but also to "negative socialization" (the formation of a number of more or less negative qualities in individuals and groups). And this creates certain risks and threats to intergenerational and intra-generational relations and the continuity of generations. The results of scientific research are designed to help improve the activities of state and public organizations, their management structures to support families and educational institutions and to improve the legal foundations of the mass media.
