The article provides a review of Dean MаcCanell's book "The Tourist: A New Theory of the Leisure Class." It is noted that methodological reliance on the provisions of structuralism and cultural anthropology has prospects while maintaining opposition to Marxist concepts of cultural and historical practice. The analysis of cultural experience, sights, and features of tourist consciousness based on the interchangeability of the spectacle and the marker of the object are of interest and remain relevant. The problem of authenticity raised in the work looks unsolvable from the perspective of today and raises the question not only about authenticity, but the very nature of cultural experience.
