The Impact of German Immigration on the Formation of Religious Diversity and Pluralism in the Thirteen Colonies

The article is devoted to the influence of the immigration of German-speaking settlers on the formation of religious diversity and pluralism in the Thirteen Colonies. A distinction is made between religious diversity and religious pluralism as one of its forms. The main data on German immigration to the colonies from the appearance of the first ethnic Germans in Jamestown to the American Revolution, including statistical data, are briefly outlined. The main centers of German immigration – the colonies of Pennsylvania and New York – are also mentioned. Particular attention is paid to the influence of Germans on the development of individual denominations in the colonies – various groups of Anabaptists (Mennonites, Amish, Dankers, Schwenkfelders), Lutherans, Reformed and the Moravian Church. Each of the above-mentioned confessions is given a separate place in the structure of the article, the history of each confession in the Thirteen Colonies is examined in detail, as well as its place in the religious landscape of the region and the contribution of German-speaking immigrants to its development. During the study, it was revealed that the Germans had a significant impact on the growth of religious diversity in the colonies, as they brought the largest number of confessions along with the English. At the same time, no direct influence of the Germans on the formation of American religious pluralism was revealed, though the the factor of wide participation of German confessions in the religious life of colonial America was identified.
