The Role of Marriage in Religious Practice and the Spiritual Life of Believers

In Orthodoxy, marriage is viewed not only as a social union between a man and a woman, but primarily as a Sacrament associated with God's established plan for humanity. Studying the sacred meaning of marriage is crucial for understanding the mechanisms of religious identity formation and moral guidance. Despite the abundance of scholarly works on traditional family and marriage relations, there is a lack of systematic theological and philosophical research on marriage from the early Christian period to the religious and philosophical concepts of the 19th and 20th centuries. The purpose of this study is to explore the religious and philosophical significance of marriage and to identify the contradiction between its traditional and modern forms. The study identifies contemporary challenges that affect marriage in the spiritual lives of believers and examines a range of measures aimed at overcoming this crisis. The results obtained open up new opportunities for systematizing theological and philosophical ideas about marriage in their historical dynamics, and can be applied in practice in the church and social environment.
