The Transition to Abstractionism: Kandinsky in the Context of Early Twentieth-Century Russian Art

The purpose of the article is to analyze abstract art in Russia exemplified by the works of its leading representative, V. Kandinsky. As a cultural phenomenon of the 20th century, abstractionism caused unexpected consequences in both theoretical and practical aspects. It has transformed into a new conceptual element of artistic culture, acting not only as a means of self-expression, but also as a tool for rethinking traditional ideas about reality. The article examines the emergence of abstract art in Russia in its relationship with the artistic and anthropological ideas of V. Kandinsky. The analysis of the theoretical propositions set forth in his work "On the spiritual in Art", as well as their implementation in artistic practice, is carried out. It examines how ideas about the spiritual essence of art, the role of color and form as independent means of expression influenced the departure from subjectivity and the emergence of a new artistic language. The work demonstrates that Kandinsky's philosophical and aesthetic ideas became not only the basis of his work, but also a powerful impulse for the development of abstract art in the 20th century.
