Cultural Security and the National Idea

Abstract

This work examines challenges accompanying the formulation of the national idea in the paradigm of cultural security. The authors analyze the contours of the development of a national idea in modern socio-cultural realities as the basic factor in the consolidation of Russian society and an element of national and cultural security. National security is based on a solid sociocultural foundation, consisting of historically established Russian civilizational values  and a national idea that holds this foundation together. Cultural security includes national security, socio-cultural and national identity, and is a determining factor in ensuring state security. The axiological core, the basic value content of Russian civilization, is made up of sociocultural invariants (spirituality, sovereignty, conciliarity), which, despite the historical dynamics, are relatively stable concepts. When detailing these invariants, traditional values are distinguished, which constitute the basis for shaping the national identity and national idea. The authors’ attention is focused on patriotism as a value that contributes to the unity of society and on its understanding in the aspect of the national idea.
