Post-Truth: Fake News as a Phenomenon of Modern Culture

Abstract

The study examines examines the phenomenon of fake news resulting from a specific attitude to information and its actual correspondence to reality. As this phenomenon has been little studied, it appears relevant to analyse how the dissemination of fake news, manipulation of facts and emotional arguments displace objective information and rational arguments in public discourse. The paper looks at the influence of post-truth on the formation of public opinion, political decision-making and perception of reality. As a result of the study, it is concluded that intentional distortion of information can potentially affect both the consciousness of an individual and the general worldview situation in society. The findings reveal two types of goals pursued by fake news: to retain users' attention for commercial considerations and to influence the social processes and informal ideology.
