Abstract

The article deals with the concept of metempsychosis during the formation of ancient thought. At the beginning of the work, the analysis of the Pythagorean doctrine of the soul as the first philosophical concept of metempsychosis is carried out. The author dwells separately on the problem of religious and philosophical influences on ideas about the soul of Pythagoras. As a special variant of metempsychosis, the author of the article singles out the ancient doctrine of palingenesia, which is manifested in the teachings of Heraclitus of Ephesus. The ideas of metempsychosis of Parmenides of Elea and Empedocles of Akragant are analyzed separately. At the end of the article, it is concluded that the ancient ideas of metempsychosis are conditioned by the general nature of ancient culture and philosophy.
