Despite the absence of formal social barriers to promotion in the military service, there is evidence of unequal chances of choosing a military professional trajectory and military-professional mobility for people from different social groups. A productive but rarely used theoretical framework for military sociology is the concept of P. Bourdieu, which allows us to consider the military organization as a social field in which the military habitus is formed and military capital is accumulated. The purpose of this study is to provide a theoretical justification for the concept of "military capital" and an empirical assessment of the importance of the social origin and cultural capital of cadets as social grounds for choosing a military profession. The study is based on a questionnaire survey of military universities cadets. The study showed a significant proportion of cadets with initial level of military capital in its cultural, physical and social forms. Military education becomes a means of social mobility for provincial young people with an average level of academic performance. Cadets consider command-administrative, educational and physical capital to be the main resources for promotion in military service. The study showed the heuristic potential of P. Bourdieu's theory for explaining the features of professional mobility of military personnel within the army hierarchy, civil-military relations, and adaptation potential of military personnel after leaving the army.
